  This workshop looks at actual operative notes from Otolaryngology practices. Two Otolaryngologists along with a Otolaryngology Certified Coder will work with the attendees to disect each operative note and code them. The operative notes will be selected from complex surgical cases

  Coding for masses in the head and neck region are discussed in clinical context. This will include biopsies and excisions of subcutaneous as well as deeper masses such as those arising in salivary and thyroid glands, cervical nodes, and soft tissue tumors. The family of neck dissection codes will be discussed including use of modifiers when done in conjunction with primary resection and/or reconstruction surgery.

  This two part course is designed to help assure one’s documentation accurately reflects the services rendered, especially for procedures; this is important from the professional liability perspective, should one be audited by a payer, or simply need to supply supporting records for reimbursement. It will include how documentation may need to evolve for compliance with ICD-10 diagnostic coding in 2013.

  Dr. Koopmann will take the attendees of this class through the payment and reimbursement process history to get where we are now, to ACOs and Group Homes plus some issues that may come up with CMS as we move into Medicare reform.

  One of the newest technologies available to Otolaryngologists today includes the balloon sinus procedures. 2011 CPT has added new codes for this new technology, and at the same time CPT has put limitations when these new CPT code may or may not be used. These new codes and traditional codes are also bundled, adding additional decision making to the coding process. Come learn when the new codes should be used and when the traditional endoscopic sinus codes are applicable.

  From Allergy, through the muscuoskelatal system, on to the respiratory system, the digestive system and concluding with the ears, Otolaryngology coding covers a great deal of terratory in the CPT manual. This class addresses the various anatomic areas cared for by an Otolaryngologist and how we code the more complex challenges we encounter in each of those areas. This is part one of a two part class.
