Expert Speakers
  Kate Brewer, PT, MBA, GCS, is the vice president of rehabilitation services for Greenfield Rehabilitation Agency, Inc. and the President/Owner of Progressive Rehab Solutions, providing practical consulting services to rehabilitation professionals. Brewer has presented nationally on documentation, coding and rehabilitation management issues and is a recognized expert in long-term care rehabilitation. She has served as the Nominating Chair for the APTA Section on Health Policy & Administration and is currently the Chapter Treasurer for the Wisconsin Physical Therapy Association. She has authored “The How-To Manual for Rehab Denials and Appeals: Navigating the Medicare Process” and “Restorative Nursing Made Easy.” In addition, she serves on the editorial board for Eli’s Rehab Report, Physical Therapy Coding Alert, and Briefings on Outpatient Rehabilitation Reimbursement and Regulations.
  Mary Daulong, PT/CHC, has specialized in healthcare operations, regulatory compliance, reimbursement processes and legislation throughout a career that includes senior and mid-management employment experience in diverse settings. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch, SAHS, has masters-level business management education and has well over twelve hundred hours of postgraduate continuing education in health care and health care-related matters. She is the first physical therapist to become certified in healthcare compliance and is an active member of the Healthcare Compliance Association. Ms. Daulong has owned and managed Business & Clinical Management Services, Inc. since 1985. Following the sale of her own practice in 1996, she focused exclusively on healthcare consultation for small to medium sized facilities, private practices and billing companies. Over the last several years, Mary has honed her expertise in healthcare regulation with specific concentration on OIG Guidance, Medicare, OSHA, DOL, HIPAA and professional practice regulatory compliance and operational integration.
  Rick Gawenda, PT, is Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Detroit Receiving Hospital and owner of Gawenda Seminars. He has provided valuable education and consulting to hospitals, rehabilitation agencies, private practices and his peers in the areas of CPT and ICD-9 coding, billing, documentation, reimbursement as it pertains to outpatient therapy services as well as the appeals process for Medicare denied claims. Mr. Gawenda is on the editorial advisory board for Advance for Directors In Rehabilitation and Briefings on Outpatient Rehab Reimbursement. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Michigan Physical Therapy Association (MPTA), MPTA Insurance Relations Committee, MPTA Director 1 overseeing the Legislative and Bylaws Committees, Government Affairs and Practice Committee and Program Committee of the Health Policy & Administration Section of the APTA. Mr. Gawenda is the current President of the Michigan Association of Medical Rehabilitation Program Administrators and President of the Section on Health Policy & Administration of the APTA effective February 19, 2007.
